Drog (colloquially "Dragon Dog") is a species of large, reptilian-mammalian hybrid organisms first introduced to Earth during the invasion by the extraterrestrial Vorlans. Initially utilized as hostile assets by invading forces, captured specimens were subsequently integrated into human military structures. Today, they serve as official military working animals (MWBs) embedded within conventional combat units and elite special forces teams.
History and First Contact[edit]
The species arrived on Earth during the Vorlan Invasion, deployed by the alien forces as shock beasts and biological combat weapons. Following the repulsion of the primary invasion waves, human military forces successfully captured a number of surviving specimens. Recognizing their intelligence, durability, and adaptability, military zoologists and handlers initiated a domestication and training program. Officially designated as “Drogs†(a corruption of a Vorlan battlefield designation), the species quickly transitioned from alien threat to vital military asset.
Physical Characteristics[edit]
Drogs are robust, quadrupedal organisms combining saurian defenses with mammalian physiology. Adults typically stand 1.4 to 1.8 meters (4.5 to 6 ft) tall at the shoulder and weigh between 350 and 600 kilograms (770 to 1,320 lbs).
- Armor and Build: Their bodies are protected by dense, interlocking scales that offer substantial resistance to shrapnel and small-arms fire. A prominent sagittal crest of defensive spikes runs from the skull to the base of the tail.
- Sensory Equipment: They possess a highly adapted visual system with a reflective tapetum lucidum, allowing for superior low-light tracking, complemented by acute auditory and olfactory senses.
- Offensive Capability: Their elongated jaws are lined with serrated, venomous teeth capable of piercing heavy tactical materials. Large, curved claws provide traction in chaotic urban or rugged frontline environments.
Behavior and Loyalty[edit]
Despite their intimidating, reptilian appearance, Drogs display social structures and emotional intelligence comparable to high-level canids or cetaceans. Handlers note that maintaining positive, respectful relations is critical; affectionate or fair treatment fosters fierce loyalty and powerful bonds to their human handlers, whereas abusive or apathetic handling can cause them to become dangerous or turn on their units. They are fully sapient, capable of complex problem-solving, and operate seamlessly alongside human soldiers in high-stress combat zones.
Military Service and Ranks[edit]
Drogs hold formal military standing, integrated into armed forces with official ranks just like traditional military working animals. They are frequently assigned to regular combat detachments as well as specialized units—such as Omega Squad—where their unique physiology acts as a force multiplier.
Operational Roles[edit]
- Combat and Shock Infantry: Deployed alongside troops to breach hostile perimeters, engage enemy combatants in close-quarters battle, and suppress insurgent threats.
- Reconnaissance: Utilized as advanced scouts to sniff out hidden hazards, ambushes, and perimeter breaches far more effectively than mechanical sensors.
- Logistics and Supply Delivery: Equipped with heavy-duty load-bearing harnesses to transport ammunition, communications arrays, and critical medical supplies directly to frontline positions cut off from mechanized transport.
Equipment and Loadout[edit]
As seen in standard deployment profiles, operational Drogs are outfitted with specialized tactical gear:
- Reinforced Molle tactical vests designed to accommodate their muscular, scale-plated anatomy.
- Integrated communications gear and tactical antennas for real-time telemetry and handler coordination.
- Secure cargo pouches for field-ration carriage, ammunition resupply, or specialized demolition tools.
