Alter Ego: Marcus Devereux
Occupation: Forensic architect / structural engineer specializing in disaster-site assessment — think the person insurance companies and city governments call in after a building collapse or fire to figure out what failed and why. High five-to-low-six-figure income, sharp dresser, respected in professional circles. It gives him legitimate reasons to be crawling through condemned buildings, industrial sites, and crime scenes at odd hours — and a forensic eye for structural weakness that doubles as tactical awareness in a fight.
Visual Theme: Matte-black tactical gear scarred with claw-like ridges down the forearms and shins — a nod to the Black Lion/Fox predator silhouette. No cape, no cowl theatrics — a low hood and a jackal-skull half-mask instead, painted bone-white against black, cracked like it's been through violence and kept anyway. Wrist-mounted retractable talons (blunt-edged, designed to maim tendons and joints, not kill).
Powers: "Still Hands" — minor low-grade regeneration (heals bruises/cuts in hours, not seconds) and blunted pain reception. He can take a beating and keep moving with surgical precision instead of adrenaline-sloppiness. "Deathsense" — brief psychometric flashes when touching a corpse or a murder weapon; he gets impressions, not full visions. Useful for detective work, ties his day job directly into his night work.
Combat style: Blend of Wing Chun/Jeet Kune Do economy-of-motion with improvised urban weaponry drawn from his profession — rebar, pipe, tools, structural debris — rather than a signature gadget-weapon. He fights like someone calculating load-bearing points on a human body: precise, brutal, disabling, never lethal. He doesn't have a no-killing rule so much as a no-killing ceiling — he knows exactly how far a joint bends before it breaks and stops himself right at the line, which is scarier to opponents than someone swinging wild.
Relationship to heroes: He'll work a case alongside a "real" hero if their objectives overlap, and he's useful precisely because he's not bound by their code of optics — he'll go where they won't. But he turns down every invitation to join a team. He doesn't think what he does is heroism; he thinks of it as inspection. Heroes save people. He's just checking for structural failure and reinforcing it before more people fall through.
